We started off the exciting week in Greece (August 2022) with arrival in Santorini. Our anniversary was in the beginning part of the week and we wanted to celebrate it in Santorini before flying to Athens.

Santorini

We spent half a week here and stayed at Volcano View Hotel in Fira. The hotel has an incredible view of the caldera and is away from the tourist crowds with a romantic atmosphere. This itinerary offers a mix of scenic hikes, beach relaxation, and culinary delights, ensuring you make the most of your time in Santorini.

Day 1: Exploring Fira

  • Evening:
    • You will most likely arrive in late afternoon or evening and want to rest from the flight.
    • Spend the evening walking around Fira Main Square and enjoy the evening ambiance of Fira.
    • Dinner at Naoussa, the best restaurant with a view in Fira.

Day 2: Hike from Fira to Oia

  • Morning:
    • Start your day with a hearty breakfast at your hotel or a local café in Fira.
    • Embark on the Hiking Trail from Fira to Oia. It is a 6-mile long walk and you will want to pace yourself.
    • Take in the breathtaking panoramic views at Nomikos Conference Centre.
  • Afternoon:
    • Reach Imerovigli, approximately halfway between Fira and Oia, boasting the best views along the caldera.
    • Explore the charming town and enjoy a delightful lunch at La Madison.
    • Marvel at Skaros Rock and continue the hike to Oia.
  • Evening:
    • Visit the Byzantine castle ruins, Oia’s most popular sunset viewpoint, and explore the area around the castle, including the famous three blue domes. Tip: Arrive early to get a good spot for the sunset view.
    • Take a bus back to Fira.

Day 3: Sunset Cruise

  • Morning:
    • Spend a leisurely morning at your hotel.
    • Grab a quick bite to eat at Lucky’s in the heart of Fira, known for the best gyros and souvlaki.
  • Afternoon:
    • Go on a Sunset Cruise with Santorini Day Tours with some time to snorkel and swim.

  • Evening:
    • Enjoy a delicious dinner at Ammoudi, the best seafood restaurant on the island, with the evening views and the calming sound of the waves.

Day 4: Oia and Ammoudi Bay

  • Morning:
    • Breakfast at a local café or bakery in Fira.
    • Visit any missed spots or revisit your favorite locations.
  • Afternoon:
    • Take a bus to Oia and walk down the steps or take a donkey ride to Ammoudi Harbour in Oia.
    • Walk the trail along the bay to take a dip in the cool clear water at Armonia Beach. Tip: Pack some swimwear and a towel to picnic by the water.

    • Enjoy a sunset dinner with live music at the hotel’s restaurant.
Tips: Buses in Santorini are very convenient to get around the island but it can get very crowded. You may want to get there early to line up to get a good seat. Remember to have some cash in hand to buy tickets at the bus station, which is located near Fira Main Square and Oia.

    • Relax and have a light dinner, reflecting on the day’s adventures.

Day 3: Olympian Legacy, and Scenic Heights

  • Morning:
    • Begin your day at the Temple of Olympian Zeus, marveling at the remaining 16 columns.
    • Head to Monastiraki Flea Market and enjoy some shopping and stroll around Monastiraki Square.
  • Afternoon:
    • Dine at one of the lively restaurants in Monastiraki Square.
    • Visit Hadrian’s Library, a testament to Athens’ intellectual heritage.
  • Evening:
    • Hike up Filopappos Hill, also known as the Hill of the Muses, for breathtaking panoramic views of Athens and enjoy the sunset.
    • Head back to the city center for a farewell dinner at a rooftop restaurant, enjoying the city lights.
